Sooner or later, almost everyone working in the UAE needs a salary certificate. Banks ask for one before they approve a loan or credit card, landlords and real estate agents may want one before a tenancy, and the UAE government lists it among the documents for sponsoring your family’s residence visas.
This guide explains what a salary certificate in the UAE is, what it should include, how to request one, how it differs from a salary transfer letter and a payslip, and what to do if your employer is slow to issue it. It also includes a sample format you can share with HR.
What is a salary certificate?
A salary certificate is a letter from your employer confirming that you work for the company and stating your monthly salary. Your employer issues it on company letterhead, and an authorised person (usually in HR or finance) signs it and normally adds the company stamp.
In other words, it proves two things at once: that you are currently employed, and how much you earn. For this reason, banks, landlords and government departments rely on it.
When you need a salary certificate in the UAE
- Family residence visas. The UAE government portal lists a salary certificate from the employer, stating the sponsor’s monthly salary, among the documents for sponsoring a spouse and children. The same page sets a minimum salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, for the sponsor.
- Bank loans and credit cards. For example, banks use the certificate to check your income and employer.
- Opening some bank accounts. Some banks ask for it alongside your Emirates ID.
- Renting a home. Similarly, landlords and agents may ask for proof of income before signing a tenancy.
- Visa applications abroad. Embassies often want proof of employment and income for visit visas.
- Car finance and leasing. Lenders usually ask for income proof.
However, requirements change, so always confirm the exact documents with the bank, landlord or authority before you apply. For family visas, the portal advises checking current conditions with ICP or GDRFA.
What a salary certificate should include
There is no single official template. Still, most requesting parties expect these details:
- company letterhead with the company’s address and contact details
- date of issue
- your full name as it appears in your passport
- your passport or Emirates ID number, if the requesting party asks for it
- your job title
- your date of joining
- your monthly salary, ideally split into basic salary and each allowance, plus the total
- the name of the organisation it is addressed to, or “To Whom It May Concern”
- an authorised signature and company stamp
Why the basic salary line matters
Ask HR to show basic salary and allowances separately, because some requesting parties look at the total, while others look closely at the basic figure. It is also a useful check for you: employers calculate your end-of-service gratuity on basic salary, so the figure on the certificate should match your registered contract.
Salary certificate vs salary transfer letter vs payslip
| Document | What it does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Salary certificate | Confirms your employment and monthly salary | Family visas, tenancy, embassy visas, general proof of income |
| Salary transfer letter | Your employer confirms it will pay your salary into a specific bank account | Loans and credit cards that require salary transfer to that bank |
| Payslip | Shows what you were paid in a particular month, with deductions | Supporting evidence alongside a certificate |
In practice, a salary transfer letter is a bigger commitment for your employer, because it promises where your pay will go. If a bank asks for one, check that your employer is willing to issue it before you apply.
How to request a salary certificate
- First, find out exactly what the requesting party needs. Ask whether they want their name on it, whether it must show basic and allowances separately, and how recent it must be.
- Email HR or use your company’s HR system. In addition, many employers have a self-service request form. A written request gives you a record.
- Give the details clearly. State who the certificate is for, the purpose, and whether you need an English or Arabic version.
- Check it before you submit it. Then confirm your name spelling, job title, joining date and salary figures against your contract.
- Keep a scanned copy. After all, you may need to send it to more than one bank or office.
Also, many banks and authorities only accept a recently issued certificate, so request it close to the date you will use it.
Salary certificate sample format
Of course, your employer will use its own layout, but a typical certificate reads like this. The names and figures are examples only.

Do you need to attest a salary certificate?
For most uses inside the UAE, such as banks and landlords, a signed and stamped certificate from your employer is enough. However, some government processes and most authorities abroad have their own rules and may require attestation. Ask the requesting authority what it needs before you spend time or money on attestation, and use official channels only.
What to do if your employer delays or refuses
In most cases, delays are simple workload issues, so follow up politely in writing and explain your deadline. If you still cannot get a certificate, these records can support your application while you wait, if the requesting party accepts them:
- your registered labour contract, which you can view through MoHRE (see our guide on how to check your labour contract in UAE)
- recent payslips
- bank statements showing your monthly salary deposits
Above all, a salary certificate should not cost you money. If anyone asks you to pay a third party to “arrange” one, or offers to produce a certificate from a company you do not work for, refuse. As a result, submitting a false salary document can lead to serious consequences with banks and government authorities.
If the real problem is late or unpaid salary rather than paperwork, read our guide to the UAE salary payment rules and how to raise a complaint with MoHRE.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues a salary certificate in the UAE?
Your employer issues it, usually through the HR or finance department. It should be on company letterhead, signed and stamped.
Is a salary certificate needed for a family visa?
The UAE government portal lists a salary certificate from the employer among the documents for sponsoring a spouse and children, together with a copy of the employment contract. Confirm current requirements with ICP or GDRFA.
Should my salary certificate show total or basic salary?
Ideally both. In particular, ask HR to list basic salary and each allowance separately, with the total at the end.
Can I get a salary certificate during probation?
Yes. A salary certificate confirms current employment and pay, so employers commonly issue one during probation. Some banks, however, apply their own rules to applicants still on probation. Our probation period guide covers your other rights during this stage.
Get the details right first time
Ask the bank or authority what it needs, request the certificate in writing, and check every figure against your contract before you submit it. As a result, a correct certificate the first time saves days of back and forth.
