Employment visa cancellation in UAE is the last formal step of every job, whether you resign, your contract ends or your employer terminates you. It decides how long you can legally stay, when you can start a new job, and whether you leave with everything your employer owes you. Many people sign the cancellation form without reading it. That one signature can cost them money.
This guide explains how cancellation works for private-sector employees, what you should check before you sign, who pays, how long your grace period lasts, and how to check your visa cancellation status using official channels only.
Employment visa cancellation in UAE: the quick answer
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Who cancels the visa? | Your employer. On the mainland it cancels the MoHRE work permit first, then the residence visa with ICP or GDRFA Dubai. |
| What do you sign? | A MoHRE cancellation form that confirms you agree and that you received all your dues. |
| Who pays? | The employer. The Labour Law bans charging workers employment costs. |
| How long does it take? | MoHRE: 2 working days. ICP: 2 days. GDRFA Dubai: 48 hours. |
| Grace period after cancellation | 30 days for most categories under ICP rules; GDRFA Dubai states 60 days. Some categories get 90 or 180 days. |
| Overstay fine | AED 50 per day after the grace period ends |
| Status check | ICP Smart Services (File Validity) or GDRFA Dubai channels |
How employment visa cancellation works
Your UAE employment visa has two parts: the work permit and labour contract that MoHRE issues, and the residence visa and Emirates ID that ICP or GDRFA Dubai issues. Cancellation removes both, in that order.
Step 1: your employer cancels the work permit with MoHRE
Your employer applies through MoHRE’s “Cancellation of Work Permits and Employment Contracts” service, using the MoHRE website, app or a service centre. MoHRE says the service takes 2 working days.
Before MoHRE approves it, three conditions apply:
- The employer pays any fines on the work permit.
- The employer gives an official statement that it has settled your dues and entitlements in full.
- You sign to show that you agree to the cancellation and that you have received all your labour dues.
That last point matters most. Your signature on the MoHRE cancellation form confirms that you received everything your employer owes you. MoHRE does not require your signature if you are outside the UAE, so the process can still go ahead while you are abroad.
Step 2: your employer cancels the residence visa and Emirates ID
Once MoHRE has cancelled the work permit, your employer cancels the residence visa:
- Dubai: GDRFA Dubai handles it through its website, app or AMER centres. It asks for the MoHRE work permit cancellation extract and aims to finish within 48 hours.
- Other emirates: ICP handles it through its Smart Services website or app, usually within 2 days. ICP cancels your Emirates ID at the same time.
If your family lives in the UAE on your sponsorship, ICP requires you to cancel their residence visas before your own, or to place them on hold for a limited period for a fee. Plan this early if your family will move with you.
If you work in a free zone
Free zone employees follow their free zone authority’s process instead of MoHRE’s. Each free zone sets its own steps. Jafza, for example, requires the company to cancel online within 30 days of the employee’s last working day. Ask your HR team which authority handles your visa.
What to check before you sign the cancellation form
Because your signature confirms receipt of your dues, check these points first:
- Final settlement. Compare your last salary, unused annual leave and notice pay with what the law allows. Our resignation and final settlement guide explains each item.
- End-of-service gratuity. Work out your figure yourself with our UAE gratuity calculation guide.
- Your passport. Your employer must not keep your official documents. Article 13 of the Labour Law says this directly.
- Experience certificate. The law requires your employer to give you one free of charge when you ask.
- Return ticket. Your employer normally pays your ticket home, unless you join another employer or the contract ended because of your own fault.
- The reason on record. Check whether your employer records the exit as a resignation or a termination. This affects an unemployment insurance claim, which our ILOE insurance guide explains.
If something is missing, raise it in writing before you sign. Once you sign, proving that you did not receive a payment becomes much harder.
Who pays for visa cancellation?
Your employer should pay. Article 6(4) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 bans employers from charging workers the fees and costs of recruitment and employment, “whether directly or indirectly”. The law does not list cancellation fees by name, but they are part of the cost of employing you. A deduction from your final settlement for “visa cancellation” deserves a written question to HR.
For reference, ICP lists an AED 50 application fee and an AED 100 smart services fee for residence cancellation. GDRFA Dubai shows different amounts on different pages, so check the current fee on its service page.
Grace period after visa cancellation
After your employer cancels your residence visa, you have a grace period to leave the UAE or move to a new visa. ICP sets the length by category:
| Grace period | Who it applies to (ICP) |
|---|---|
| 180 days | Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their families; widows or divorced women of residents; students after graduation; foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens |
| 90 days | Skilled workers in levels 1 to 3; property owners |
| 60 days | Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host |
| 30 days | All other categories |
GDRFA Dubai’s cancellation page gives a 60-day grace period after cancellation or expiry. The two authorities do not state the same figure, so do not rely on a general rule. Check the exact date on your own file, as the next section explains.
Staying after your grace period ends costs AED 50 for every extra day, according to ICP. If your grace period falls short, change your status or leave before the last day.
How to check your visa cancellation status
Always check your status yourself instead of relying on a message from HR. Use official channels only:
- ICP (all emirates except Dubai-issued visas): open ICP Smart Services, choose File Validity, and search by passport details or Emirates ID. According to Gulf News, the result shows your status and the date you must leave or change status.
- GDRFA Dubai: use the GDRFA website or app with your passport or residence file details.
- By phone: ICP’s call centre is 600 522 222.
- Work permit side: our guide to checking your labour contract and work permit covers the MoHRE checks.
Travel agencies and look-alike websites also offer “visa status checks” and ask for passport numbers or payment. Never enter your details on a site that does not end in .gov.ae, and never pay a third party to check your status.
Moving to a new job: transfer or cancellation?
On the mainland, MoHRE handles a job change as a transfer work permit. MoHRE’s rules say:
- You must not hold an active work permit, so your old employer must cancel it first.
- Your new employer must apply for the new permit within 90 days of the old permit’s cancellation.
The 90-day window for the work permit does not extend your residence grace period. If your grace period is 30 days, your new employer needs to move faster than that, or you need to change your status or leave. Agree the timeline with both employers before your last day.
Before you accept a new role, verify the job offer and employer. A genuine employer never asks you to pay for your visa or work permit.
If you are outside the UAE
Your employer can cancel your visa while you are abroad, since MoHRE drops the signature requirement for overseas employees. Separately, u.ae states that a residence visa becomes void if the holder stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row. ICP exempts some categories from this rule, including Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders. If you plan a long trip near the end of your job, confirm your visa position first.
What to do if your employer refuses or delays cancellation
A delayed cancellation can block your next job. If your employer will not cancel your visa, will not pay your dues, or keeps your passport, take these steps:
- Send HR a written request with your last working day and what you need.
- Keep copies of your contract, resignation or termination letter, and payslips.
- File a labour complaint with MoHRE through its website, app or call centre. MoHRE aims to settle complaints amicably within 14 working days before it refers them to court.

Visa cancellation in UAE: frequently asked questions
How many days can I stay in the UAE after employment visa cancellation?
It depends on your category. ICP gives 30 days to most categories and 90 or 180 days to some groups, while GDRFA Dubai states 60 days. Check your own date on ICP Smart Services or with GDRFA.
Can my employer charge me for visa cancellation?
The Labour Law bans employers from charging workers employment costs, directly or indirectly. Visa cancellation is part of those costs, so question any deduction for it in writing.
How do I check my visa cancellation status?
Use ICP Smart Services and search File Validity with your passport or Emirates ID details. For a Dubai visa, use the GDRFA website or app.
Should I sign the cancellation form before I receive my final settlement?
Think carefully first. The MoHRE form records that you received all your labour dues, so check your final settlement and gratuity before you sign.
What is the fine for staying after the grace period?
ICP charges AED 50 for each day you stay after your grace period ends.
Leave your job cleanly
A smooth employment visa cancellation comes down to three habits: check your dues before you sign, confirm your grace period on an official channel, and agree timelines with your next employer in writing. Do that, and cancellation becomes a routine step rather than a costly surprise.
